The History of Your Car

Besides the V5, also request from the seller to provide you the following documentation about the car:

o Service History Or Repair Receipts
o If said vehicle is over 3 year old, current MOT certificates

Service history reports or repair receipts can help you determine the car’s history; whether or not it has been involved in any major accidents that might impair the cars performance or safety. Another thing you should take note of with these documents, are the mileage readings that are logged. This can help you determine if the current mileage of the vehicle has been tampered with or not.

Laws in UK state that car above the age of 3 years must come with a MOT certificate. This is updated annually to ensure that old cars have gone through inspections to show that they are safe to be driven. Buying a car without an MOT could mean that you buying a vehicle without proper safety standards.

If the seller is unable to provide you with one or more of these documents, or if they are presenting to you any suspicious information, trust your instincts and walk away from the sale!
